Sustained

For me, I find that each week presents a particular theme and a word that sticks out. This week that word is “SUSTAIN”. As you read this I encourage you to think about what sustains you.

The table, the oil, and the cup

There comes a point where every one of us feels tired and worn down. How do I keep going when I don’t have much left to give?

David gives us a beautiful picture in Psalm 23:5, a testimony to how the Lord sustains him.

"You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows."

God often uses physical things to teach us spiritual realities in a way we can understand. In this verse, He paints a picture of three things that sustain His people: a table, oil, and an overflowing cup.

The table reminds us that the Lord renews our strength.

When life leaves you tired, weary, and drained, God doesn’t simply tell you to keep going—He prepares a table for you. Just as a nourishing meal restores your body, the Lord Himself restores your soul. David reminds us that this table isn’t prepared after the battle is over, but in the presence of our enemies. Even when we’re surrounded by difficulty, stress, or uncertainty, God provides the strength we need. David knew this from experience. Through countless trials, he discovered that it was the Lord who sustained him. He feeds our souls with His presence, His Word, and His promises until strength returns.

The oil reminds us that the Lord renews our purpose.

In Scripture, oil wasn’t poured on someone casually—it was a sign that God had chosen, commissioned, and empowered them for His purposes. When David wrote, “You anoint my head with oil,” he was likely remembering the day Samuel anointed him and the Spirit of the Lord came upon him. That moment reminded David that his life belonged to something greater than his present circumstances. In the same way, every believer has been anointed by the Holy Spirit and called into God’s work. When we remember that our lives are part of His greater story, our purpose outlasts our weariness. We may grow tired, but God’s calling has not changed.

Ephesians 2:10 “We are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for the good works He prepared beforehand for us to walk in.”

Sometimes we become weary because we've forgotten why we're here. But remembering that God has called us, equipped us, and is still working through us gives us endurance to keep serving.

The overflowing cup reminds us that the Lord renews our joy.

David doesn't say his cup is merely full—it overflows.

Our joy isn't meant to come from whether everything went smoothly this week, whether the set sounded perfect, or whether we feel energized. Our joy comes from the Shepherd Himself. When our lives are centered on Him, He fills us with something the world can't manufacture and circumstances can't steal.

My prayer is that we wouldn't try to sustain ourselves.

Instead, may we come to the table He has prepared. May we remember the purpose He's placed on our lives. And may our cups overflow with the joy that only He can give.
